Department Of Community Medicine Programs

MSc/PhD Community Medicine (CAS Campus)

Introduction

The Department of Community Medicine runs a postgraduate degree programme in public Health leading to the award of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree.

Philosophy, Objectives and Scope of the Programme

In the past years there have been serious and repeated outbreaks of diseases like yellow fever, cerebrospinal meningitis, cholera, AIDS and etc. Other preventable non-communicable diseases like injuries, cancers and cardiovascular diseases are now on the increase. Clusters of factories and industries are springing up all over the region creating uncontrolled environmental pollution and degradation. These are indications that existing local facilities and capabilities for containing these diseases and outbreaks are inadequate. A pressing need therefore exists to upgrade the quality, and scope of public health education, research and action to meet the practical challenges in the provision of the health care in Nigeria.

At the end of the master degree programme, participants are expected to:

  1. Have knowledge of the core disciplines of public health.
  2. Have a broad knowledge of health delivery systems.
  3. Synthesize health data.
  4. Develop managerial skills.
  5. Plan, implement and evaluate health programmes
  6. Develop research skills.
