Introduction-

Programme Philosophy and Objectives

The postgraduate programmes in the department are aimed at training professional Food Scientist and Technologist who will serve in both private and public sectors of the economy. The philosophy of the programme is to provide functional education for post- graduate students who, eventually after the training, will become creators of jobs and will in addition be involved in creation of new knowledge in Food Science and Technology through research and in training of high level academics and industrialists.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Candidates with a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Food Science and Technology or allied discipline with not less than Lower Credit level.
  2. Candidates with a 3rd Class and above in any area of Food Science and Technology or related disciplines from recognized Universities.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc) PROGRAMME

(i) Candidates must possess 5 Credits at WASCE or SSCE or GCE or NECO at maximum of two sittings with credit in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and Physics.
(ii) Candidates with first degree in Food Science and Technology and
(iii) Candidates whose area of specialization is not Food Science and Technology are required to take the Postgraduate Diploma programme of the Department

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) PROGRAMME

Candidates applying for Ph. D must have the requirements listed in (i) and (ii) and possess a Master’s degree in relevant areas of Food Science and Technology with a grade point average of 3.5 on a five point scale or 3 point on a 4 point scale. Candidates who have scored a grade point average of less than 3.5/5 or3.0/4 in the M.Sc programme shall be admitted to the M.Sc/Ph.D programme.

Duration of the Programme

  • The Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programme covers 3 semesters and it involves taught courses and research project.
  • The duration for Master of Science (M. SC programme is 4 semesters (24 months); 2 semesters of taught courses and 2 semesters of research project.
  • The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) programme is a minimum of 36 months of which the first semester of the programme shall be devoted to intense coursework.
