The Department of Agricultural Economics Management and Extension of the Ebonyi State University offers postgraduate programmes which lead to the award of:

  1. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Farm Management and Extension
  2. Master of Science (M.Sc) Agricultural Economics, and Agricultural Extension (option)
  3. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Agricultural Economics
  4. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Agricultural Extension

OBJECTIVES

The Department aims at producing highly skilled Agricultural Economists and Extensionists to man various positions in the Research Institutions, University, other institutions of higher learning and other related public and private concerns in Nigeria, other African countries and the world at large. The department also aims at collaborating with both Governmental institutions that deal on Agriculture in order to exchange ideas and resources for the better development; and growth of the Nigeria Agricultural Sector of her economy.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND EXTENSION

This programme is designed to cater for science graduates other than in agriculture and who may be employed in various ministries of agriculture as advisers social workers and organizers of farm input distribution and other management functions. By virtue of the challenges posed by those professional position the need for courses in agricultural economics and extension become very imperative.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc) PROGRAMME

The Postgraduate programme is designed to provide academic and practical qualifications to candidates wishing to become teachers or researchers in their fields of study. It is also aimed at upgrading the academic standing of planners for more efficient planning ability and implementation of agricultural development programmes.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D) PROGRAMME

The minimum qualification for admission to the PhD Programme is the M.Sc in Agricultural Economics or Agricultural Extension. However, candidates with a First Class Bachelor's Degree are also eligible to apply. Candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall follow an approved course of research for a period of not less than three academic years for full-time students and four academic years for part-time students after registration, under a supervisors appointed by senate. The examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall normally be by submission of thesis and by an oral examination.

FOR MASTER OF SCIENCE/DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (M.Sc/Ph.D) PROGRAMME

Courses to be taken will be dependent on the performance of the candidate based on his/her academic transcript. But in all, the student must carry a minimum of 6 credit hours and a maximum of 14 credit hours.

In all cases, such students will retake all courses which they scored below 60% or grade of B; and must pass the course(s) with a minimum of B grade.
Other PhD students may be required to register and to take courses depending on their background which could prepare and re-tool them for their programme. Such registered course/courses must be passed with a minimum grade of C or 50%.

M.Sc/Ph.D  PROGRAMME

FARM MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCTION ECONOMICS


PGD ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates for the postgraduate diploma in farm management and agricultural extension are expected to be working in public and private establishments related to agriculture and rural development. They should also posses any fo the following qualification:

  • A bachelor's or hiher degree in agriculture, social science or related disciplines; or any other degree considered relevant by the department
  • A higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent with Credit pass in Agriculture or related disciplines.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc) PROGRAMME

Candidates seeking admission into the MSc programme must posses a good second class honours degree and or a good credit in the postgraduate diploma in Farm Management and Extension from Ebonyi State University or other institutions recognized by the senate of the university

MODE AND DURATION OF STUDY

Candidates may be admitted on full-time or part-time basis on resource availability in the Department. Full-time programme lasts a minimum of 12 calendar months while part-time lasts a minimum of 18 calendar months
There are two major options thus:

  • Rural Development
