A cursory look at the historical antecedence of the Ebonyi State University would reveal some chequered and tortuous trends. The decision to run pre-science degree programme was taken by Emeka Omeruah Military Administration in 1987 at which time the College of Agricultural Science also finally took off at Abakaliki Campus of the then Anambra State University of Technology, ASUTECH. Through the creation of Enugu State in 1991 when Abakaliki Campus became more populous, under now ESUT and 1996 when Ebonyi State was created, the status of the institution was raised to a University College.
The final elevation to a full-fledged and autonomous University came in September 1999, an action which also informed the birth of the Post-Graduate School of the University.
