Department of Applied Microbiology

PGD/MSc/PhD in Applied Microbiology

Introduction

This curriculum for postgraduate programme is aimed at guiding prospective candidates and members of staff on the objectives, structure, regulation and content of the PGD, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programme of the Department. It must be studied in conjunction with postgraduate rules and regulations, which take precedence in the event of conflict.
The postgraduate programmes will lead to the award of:
  1. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
  2. Master of Science (M. Sc) in Microbiology and
  3. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Microbiology

Philosophy of the Programme

To train and develop individuals to meet the Nations need for Microbiologists in diverse areas. This can be achieved by allocating a student to a supervisor whose job is to train the student on research skills and knowledge that can be applied in industries, environmental management, food, health etc. It will further provide study on:

  • The fundamental knowledge of microorganisms.
  • Isolation, diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis for infectious disease.
  • Application of microorganisms in various industrial and research centers to solving the biomedical and biotechnological problems of this generation.

This page may not offer all the information needed by the students, therefore students are required to ask questions where and when in doubt. All postgraduate students are advised to be conversant with this document which will help to plan their work to the satisfaction of the requirement for their various degrees.

OBJECTIVES OF PROGRAMME

Postgraduate programmes of the Department are designed to::
  1. Deepen the knowledge of prospective graduates in natural and applied area of microbiology.
  2. Develop the ability to carry out an independent research in pure and applied science or related field resulting in original contributions to knowledge.
  3. Providing the manpower need of the university, the state and nation especially in medicine, industries environment, agriculture, education etc.
